Sit near the wings to feel less turbulence

When choosing airplane seats, pick rows close to the wings if you want a smoother, more comfortable ride. Seats in this area typically experience less movement during turbulence.

Why seats near the wings feel more stable

An aircraft’s center of gravity is located near the wings, which is also the point the plane naturally pivots around during turbulence. Seats closer to this midpoint experience less vertical movement. Seats toward the nose and especially the tail move more noticeably because they are farther from the plane’s center.

What this means when choosing a seat

If turbulence makes you uncomfortable:

  • Choose seats near or directly over the wings
  • Avoid seats at the very front or rear of the plane
  • Expect slightly more motion the farther you sit from the midpoint

This won’t eliminate turbulence, but it can noticeably reduce how much you feel it.
